Over time, scientists have developed algorithms that are inspired from nature, such as Genetic algorithms, ant colonies, bird flocking, fish schooling and bacterial growth.... etc. Bio-DNA-inspired techniques such as DNA computing have used properties of DNA molecules including high dense information storage, massive parallelism, to solve many of the hardest computational problems. As traditional encryption systems face many difficult challenges, including the emergence of advanced computer generations, DNA computing are integrated with the cryptography area to improve protection of important data transmitted via unsecure media like the internet. This led to the emergence of a new field, which is DNA cryptography. In this paper we perform a large study of different DNA based cryptography techniques. We have classified several works according tree different criteria such as the inspired procedure, the nature of the key (symmetric or asymmetric), and traditional encryption algorithms combined with DNA computing.
